We excavate and compact existing soil, or remove and replace unstable or clay-heavy material with compacted gravel base. A 4-inch gravel base, properly compacted, allows drainage while providing a stable platform. On properties with particularly wet or unstable soil, we may specify a 6-inch base or recommend additional perimeter drainage.
For reinforcement, most Fowler driveways call for 6x6 10/10 welded wire mesh—a grid of #10 wire spaced 6 inches on center in both directions.
